The Christa Files

These are the only digital collages I’ve ever made. The young woman in them is my grandmother Christa, who died unexpectedly in an accident in 2022. While clearing out her apartment, I came across this beautiful photograph of her—with a love letter written on the back.

I had never imagined her as a young girl. She never showed any pictures of herself from that time. But there she was… a young girl photographed by someone who loved her.

These digital works came out of a course I once took on Domestika, taught by Petra Zehner: Artistic Collage with Mixed Media. It was a good class. I learned a lot. But still—I stay with paper. I need the absence of screens, the quiet conversation with scissors and glue, and the subtle, tactile language of the materials.
