Julia Braun is a collage artist and communication designer based in Göttingen, Germany. Working primarily with cutouts from vintage magazines and advertisements of the 1950s and 60s, she creates analog collages that examine the representation of women in mid-century Western consumer culture.
Born in 1974, Julia holds a degree in Communication Design and has specialized in book and editorial design for over two decades. She began making collages in 2012 — what started as a playful experiment has gradually deepened into a sustained artistic practice with a clear feminist perspective.
Her primary material is the vintage magazine: those glossy, directive pages that told women exactly who to be, what to buy, and how to smile while doing it. Julia cuts into this visual language and reassembles it — not to restore, but to question. The advertisements that once worked to tame women’s desires become raw material for something more unsettling and more honest.
She works in series — from large ongoing bodies of work to small, instinct-driven experiments on worn book covers. Her collages have been featured in Suboart Magazine, CC Contemporary Collage Magazine, and Photo Trouvée Magazine, and she participates in the international collage community including Februlage and World Collage Day.
