Februlage 2026

This February, I took part in Februllage – an annual collage challenge run by the Edinburgh Collage Collective and the Scandinavian Collage Museum, where artists from around the world make one collage per day, each responding to a daily word prompt. My self-imposed twist: working exclusively on the envelopes from an advent calendar, sixteen small, awkward, wonderfully inconvenient little surfaces. My materials are mostly vintage magazines from the 50s and 60s – and their vision of women neatly contained in domesticity and consumerism is endlessly rich material for cutting up and rearranging. Restrictions and I don’t usually get along – I like to swim freely in my sea of paper – but there’s something quietly interesting about what happens when the canvas talks back. I didn’t manage to keep up with every prompt – maybe next year.
